WHAT SORT OF LITERATURE BOOKS SHOULD A STUDENT READ?
The reader who wants to obtain all the benefits that literature can offer, must read only those books where the English language is used with accuracy and effect. In other words, the writer must be judged to have an in-depth knowledge of grammar, syntax and all the rules of correct English usage.
Students should choose books that are capable of making them wiser after reading. This means that books should be chosen for their capability for making students think about some important issues or aspects of life raised in the books. For instance, Shakespeare’s Macbeth makes you think about ambition; Julius Caesar makes you think about “friendship and betrayal.” What does the marriage of Anasewa make you think about? Life on the whole and about the inordinate pursuit of material wealth? Therefore, any book that does not help a student to think about life and the important aspects of it, should not be read. He/she should drop it.
A student should read wide – novels, plays, biographies, poems, etc. a student should also vary the authors and their countries of origin. he/she should read books from Africa, China, Europe, USSR, etc, in order to balance his view of the world and the knowledge of the people that live.
A student is equally discouraged from reading books that he neither understands nor enjoys. He is advised to drop those books in preference to others that he enjoys.
